The car I brought doesn't have one, and I'm thinking this will be my first mod. Any pointers?

If it has a distributor, just plug it into the tach terminal and run the wires through harness holes in the firewall and mount it wherever you want.

Gear it for 100mph and throw racing pads on it. That is life's first lesson in all things.

Did you pick a brand?

I did the same thing, and there were only four wires. One was ground, one was light, and the other two ran to the coil/distributor.
I think.
It came with a piece of paper, and I read it.

never did an aftermarket tach (I replaced the whole gauge cluster from a higher spec to get my tach) but I did do an integrated shift light.
apparently enough years ago though that the pictures in the thread are long since gone, but it was a pretty simple matter of finding power, and a tach source signal. both of which I obtained from behind the cluster, but could be obtained more directly from in the engine bay.
